Our monthly series Doc/Nights presented by Doc'n Roll makes its return to our cinema on Thursday 30th January for our first instalment of 2020. To kick it all off, we're bringing you a screening of The Rise of The Synths followed by a Q&A hosted by DJ Mag Film Editor Kirsty Allison and featuring London-based, German synthwave duo Nina and UK synthwave composer 80s Stallone.
In the mid 2000s and with the help of Myspace, several composers from different countries spontaneously started an underground music scene that the internet would call, among other names, Synthwave. It is defined as electronic music strongly inspired by soundtracks and 80s pop culture. These composers who have reached millions, all remained anonymous - until now. Narrated by the iconic director John Carpenter, The Rise of The Synths is a journey back and forth in time, from the roots of this scene to its impact on today's pop culture. So what is Synthwave? An irresistible blend of nostalgia and music; of creative processes and cultural references; of re-appropriation and legitimate creation.
The screening will be hosted in our 100-seat cinema space; the event is free with booking required. A very limited number of walk-in tickets will be available on the day, on a first come, first served rule.
